Description
On May 24th, the Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council welcomes Dr. Doug Toomey, Professor of Geophysics at the University of Oregon, to Cottage Grove for our May 2016 Science Pub presentation. His talk entitled The Present and Future of Earthquake Monitoring in Oregon will focus on two themes: The Cascadia Initiative, an onshore/offshore seismic and geodetic experiment studying megathrust earthquakes and other activity associated with the Juan De Fuca and Gorda plates; and the status of Earthquake Early Warning (EEW) systems and their uses.
Toomey's research focuses on earthquake and volcanic processes at plate boundaries and hotspots, including subduction zones and mid-ocean ridges. Toomey leads the University of Oregon’s effort on the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network (http://pnsn.org) and on implementation of a West Coast Earthquake Early Warning system (http://www.shakealert.org). He led the oceanographic component of the Cascadia Initiative (http://cascadia.uoregon.edu), a National Science Foundation experiment to investigate subduction zone processes in the PNW. Toomey has been on the faculty of the University of Oregon since 1990 and his research has been published widely in Nature, Science, Geology, Nature Geoscience and specialty journals.
The Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council hosts a free monthly public meeting series called the Coast Fork Science Pub on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 5-7pm at the Axe & Fiddle, 657 E. Main Street in Cottage Grove. The event begins with informal socializing, trivia, prizes and updates about the watershed and watershed council during the first hour. Then our formal science pub presentation begins at 6pm. Participants are encouraged to support the Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council by ordering food & drinks from 5-7:30pm, as 10% of the sales from evening sales will benefit the Watershed Council. The event is free and the public of all ages are welcome.
