Exploring the Willamette Water Trail & Greenway Program
Tuesday May 23rd 5-7:00pm
at Axe & Fiddle, 657 E. Main Street, Cottage Grove
On May 23rd, the Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council welcomes Travis Williams, Willamette Riverkeeper Executive Director, for our May 2017 Science Pub presentation entitled Exploring the Willamette Water Trial & Greenway Program. The Willamette River Water Trail is one of only 20 National Water Trails in the United States. It spans over 200 miles of the Willamette River and key tributaries, including the Coast Fork Willamette River, creating multiple opportunities for people to connect with the river landscape. This accessibility enables people to encounter a diversity of wildlife, explore backwaters, enjoy scenic campsites and experience relative peace and quiet within close proximity to many of Oregon’s largest population centers. This presentation will provide insight on how to access and enjoy the Willamette River Water Trail. Mr. Williams will explain the interesting past and little-known aspects of the Willamette River Greenway Program, the program which provides much of the foundation of the Willamette River Water Trail. Just in time to plan your quick summer getaway or multi-day trip, come learn about the wealth of opportunity provided by the Willamette River Water Trail & Greenway Program!
Since 2000, Travis Williams has led the Willamette Riverkeeper in protecting and restoring the Willamette River. He has always been a major proponent of river experience to help people of all background to see and experience the Willamette up close. In 2001, Mr. Williams formed the first Paddle Oregon trip and in 2005 he led the effort to establish the Willamette Water Trail. Mr. Williams instigated the creation of the Great Willamette River Cleanup which removes literally tons of trash and debris from the river each year. He is the author of the Willamette River Field Guide as well as the two Water Trail Guides for the Willamette. He holds a B.A. in International Studies from Portland State University and an M.S. in Environmental Studies from Johns Hopkins University.
The Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council hosts a free monthly public meeting series called the Coast Fork Science Pub on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 5-7pm at the Axe & Fiddle, 657 E. Main Street in Cottage Grove. The event begins with informal socializing, trivia, prizes and updates about the watershed and watershed council during the first hour. Then our Science Pub presentation begins at 6pm. Participants are encouraged to support the Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council by ordering food & drinks from 5-7:30pm, as 10% of the sales from evening sales will benefit the Watershed Council. The event is free to the public and all ages are welcome. For further information, visit Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council on Facebook and www.coastfork.org.
