Main Street\, Cottage Grove\n\n \n\nOn June 27th\, the Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council welcomes Christine Buhl\, Forest Entomologist with Oregon Department of Forestry\, for our June 2017 Science Pub presentation entitled What the heck is Dendroctonus?! Learn all that you ever wanted to know (and more!) about urban and forest tree health as it pertains to insects. Ms. Buhl will provide a general overview of what makes trees tasty to insects\, how to diagnose attacks from our more prominent pests\, invasive insects to be on the lookout for and the benefits of forest insects. This presentation will answer questions like: Why is my tree dying? What are those holes or globs of sap from? What's eating those leaves? What good are insects to trees anyway? And most importantly: What can I do to protect my individual urban tree or forested stand from insect damage? \n\n\n\nChristine Buhl obtained a B.S. in Environmental Science with a specialization and minor in Entomology from Oregon State University and a Ph.D. in Entomology from University of Wisconsin-Madison. She has a broad background in entomology which has led to various projects concerning fire ant biocontrol along the Texas-Mexico border\, insect food sources for endangered Hawaiian finches\, public health for arthropod-borne illnesses and chemical defense ecology of genetically modified biomass crops. She currently serves as the state Forest Entomologist with the Oregon Department of Forestry where she provides entomological technical assistance to various types of landowners and flies aerial surveys of forest damage. When not talking bugs\, she is an outdoors and fitness enthusiast\, hamburger snob and connoisseur of yeast-fermented malt beverages flavored with hops.\n\n\n\nThe Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council hosts a free monthly public meeting series called the Coast Fork Science Pub on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 5-7pm at the Axe & Fiddle\, 657 E. Main Street in Cottage Grove. The event begins with informal socializing\, trivia\, prizes and updates about the watershed and watershed council during the first hour. Then our Science Pub presentation begins at 6pm. Participants are encouraged to support the Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council by ordering food & drinks from 5-7:30pm\, as 10% of the sales from evening sales will benefit the Watershed Council.
