Main Street\, Cottage Grove\n\n \n\nOn April 25th the Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council welcomes Wes Messinger\, US Army Corps of Engineers' Willamette Valley Project Botanist\, for our April 2017 Science Pub presentation entitled Biodiversity of Western Oregon Native Bees. Everybody's worried about the bees\, and with good reason. In this presentation\, Mr. Messinger will explain some of the diversity we stand to lose with a focus on native Oregon bees. How many kinds are there? How do they live their lives?  Black\, red\, yellow or metallic\, social or solitary\, worker or parasite\, abundant or nearly extinct\, fighting over mouse-holes or wrapping their babies in leaves: native bee variety is astounding.\n\n\n\nA biologist by inclination\, upbringing\, and training\, Mr. Messinger earned his B.S. and M.S. from Oregon State University\, where he concentrated on plant ecology and evolution. He's studied and managed native habitats\, rare plants\, and rare butterflies in Oregon for some decades. Mr. Messinger cares for land and organisms associated with the dams in the Willamette watershed. Working with plants for so long naturally led to an interest in their insect associates. You could ask him about pre-dispersal seed predators or gall midges\, but these days\, he is getting the most fun out of pollinators\, especially bees.\n\n\n\nThe Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council hosts a free monthly public meeting series called the Coast Fork Science Pub on the fourth Tuesday of each month from 5-7pm at the Axe & Fiddle\, 657 E. Main Street in Cottage Grove. The event begins with informal socializing\, trivia\, prizes and updates about the watershed and watershed council during the first hour. Then our Science Pub presentation begins at 6pm. Participants are encouraged to support the Coast Fork Willamette Watershed Council by ordering food & drinks from 5-7:30pm\, as 10% of the sales from evening sales will benefit the Watershed Council.
